Washington, DC – Tonight LGBTQ Victory Fund candidate Chris Pappas won a tough reelection fight for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. With this win, he remains the only out LGBTQ person ever elected to Congress from New Hampshire. A record number of LGBTQ people ran for Congress this year.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, issued the following statement:
“Tonight, New Hampshire voters made their voices heard loud and clear: politicians who peddle in anti-LGBTQ bigotry and deny election results will not represent them in the U.S. Congress. . That message, in a key swing district, could not come at a more important time as so many politicians appeal to bigotry and disinformation for their own political gain. We are confident that Chris will continue being one of the most effective LGBTQ champions in Congress. At a time of rampant homophobia and hate, his win tonight is a sign that the future of the LGBTQ movement is brighter than ever.”
There are currently just 11 out LGBTQ people serving in Congress. To reach equitable representation, voters must elect 21 more LGBTQ people to the U.S. House of Representatives and five more LGBTQ people to the U.S. Senate, according to LGBTQ Victory Institute.
