Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ+ Victory Fund candidate Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford won the election for Madison Common Council, District 15. Martinez-Rutherford is now the first out trans woman ever elected in Madison, Wisconsin history. There are currently zero out trans women elected officials serving in Wisconsin, according to LGBTQ+ Victory Institute.

She has spent years advancing social justice initiatives within her community, including safeguarding abortion rights at Abortion Access Front. From increasing access to affordable housing to investing in mental health services, we are confident she will be an exceptional leader for all Madisonians. In the face of rising transphobia, her win is a sign that messages of hope and compassion will ultimately outshine bigots’ hate.”
Four additional LGBTQ+ Victory Fund candidates running for the Madison Common Council also won tonight: Juliana Bennett, John Duncan, Derek Field and Michael Verveer.
