Washington, DC – Last night LGBTQ+ Victory Fund endorsed candidate Fabian Nelson advanced to the runoff election for Mississippi state House District 66. If elected, Nelson would be the first out LGBTQ+ person ever elected to the Mississippi state legislature. Mississippi and Louisiana are the only U.S. states to have never elected an out LGBTQ+ person to the state legislature.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, released the following statement:
“Mississippi’s resilient LGBTQ+ community has lacked representation for far too long, with the wounds to show for it. Lawmakers throughout the state have consistently put LGBTQ+ rights on the chopping block, which is why Fabian’s success is not just a deafening rebuke to hate, but a clear sign of hope that our best days lie ahead. This exceptional result is a testament to Fabian’s outstanding ground game, clear policy plans and inclusive message for the future. We are confident that come November, he will be a powerful lawmaker and advocate in the state legislature.”
