Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ Victory Fund endorsed candidate Jamie McLeod-Skinner announced she won the Democratic primary for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District. With this victory, she is now on track to become the first out LGBTQ person ever elected to Congress from Oregon. There are currently just 11 out LGBTQ people serving in Congress, only three of whom are lesbians.
Victory Fund named McLeod-Skinner a Game Changer candidate, a designation given to congressional and statewide candidates in history-making races, that comes with additional support and services from LGBTQ Victory Fund to ensure they win on Election Day.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, issued the following statement about her win:
“For years, Jamie has been committed to addressing the climate crisis and its impacts, helping working families, safeguarding abortion and access to reproductive health care and defending our democracy. Her success is a direct result of her steadfast commitment to community organizing and grassroots advocacy. Oregonians are clearly enthusiastic about her vision for our future. For far too long, Oregon’s LGBTQ community has not had a voice in Congress. By shattering this lavender ceiling, Jamie is one step closer to changing that. With anti-LGBTQ attacks spreading like wildfire and lawmakers in Congress bent on outlawing abortion and reproductive health care, her election could not come at a more critical moment in our nation’s history.”
