Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ Victory Fund, the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders to public office, endorsed San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez in her bid for California’s open 53rd Congressional District. If elected, Gómez would double California’s LGBTQ representation in Congress, joining incumbent Representative Mark Takano. She would also become one of the first two openly LGBTQ Latinx members of Congress from any state, along with Victory Fund candidate Ritchie Torres, who’s running for Congress in New York’s 15th District.
Gómez represents District 9 on the San Diego City Council, where she’s currently serving her second term as Council President. She was the first queer Latina to hold the Council President position as well as the first queer Latina to chair the Metropolitan Transportation System. During her time on City Council, Gómez has worked to improve the quality of life for all residents, leading initiatives to improve transit, combat the housing crisis and mitigate climate change.
“In a crowded field, Georgette Gómez has demonstrated that she’s the candidate best prepared to represent San Diego in the U.S. Congress,” said Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund. “San Diego has long been home to talented, dedicated LGBTQ officials, and we think it’s time that its congressional delegation reflects this diversity. Rooted in her experience as a local advocate and elected official, Georgette will fight for all her constituents as she seeks to expand healthcare and combat the climate crisis. As the first openly LGBTQ Latina member of Congress, Georgette’s perspective will be invaluable in ensuring Congress stands up for all human rights.”
Victory Fund has endorsed ten congressional candidates so far for the 2020 cycle, including non-incumbents John Blair, Jon Hoadley, Mondaire Jones, Gina Ortiz Jones and Ritchie Torres.
In 2018, Victory Fund endorsed a historic number of LGBTQ candidates for Congress. Eight U.S. House candidates and two U.S. Senate candidates won their elections – the most ever.
More information about the candidates is available at victoryfund.org/ourcandidates. Since 1991, Victory Fund has helped thousands of openly LGBTQ candidates win local, state and federal elections.
