Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, Human Rights Campaign PAC, Equality PAC, LPAC and National Center for Transgender Equality Action Fund announced their day-one endorsement of Delaware state Senator Sarah McBride for Delaware’s At-Large Congressional seat. The groups referenced McBride’s record of progress both during and before her tenure in Delaware’s state legislature as they endorsed her candidacy to become the first trans member of Congress in U.S. history. McBride previously made history in 2020 when she became the nation’s first out trans state Senator and is a former LGBTQ+ Victory Fund intern.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund:
“LGBTQ+ Victory Fund is proud to endorse Sarah McBride’s historic Congressional campaign. Democracy only works when it includes all of us. Sarah’s success would ensure trans people have a voice in Congress for the first time in U.S. history. Sarah is an experienced lawmaker with a track record of fighting for smart policies that benefit all Delawareans, from leading the passage of paid medical and family leave to helping pass critical gun safety laws. She has proven time and time again that she has the courage to have tough conversations and build consensus on even the most challenging issues. Her trailblazing campaign is both a sign of hope for the LGBTQ+ community and a rallying cry — we must continue organizing, continue running for office and continue voting. Our rights depend on it.”
Kelley Robinson, President of Human Rights Campaign:
“From her leadership at HRC to advance protections for LGBTQ+ Americans to her time serving as a state senator, she has proven time and again to have a keen understanding of what it takes to make real, tangible, enduring change. We’re at a pivotal moment in American history and American politics, where the progress that we’ve made is under near-constant attack. McBride’s lived experiences, courage, and proven record of leadership has prepared her to bring the fight of Delaware’s families to our nation’s capital.”
Rep. Mark Takano and Rep. Ritchie Torres, Co-Chairs of Equality PAC
“Equality PAC is proud to stand with State Senator Sarah McBride in her historic run to represent Delaware in the House of Representatives. Sarah has proven time and again through her service that she has a deep understanding of the problems Delawareans face, and will help protect the rights of all people, no matter their race, color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation. And as MAGA extremists target and demonize members of the trans community at all levels of our government, this is our moment to make history by ensuring that the trans community has a seat at the table as our nation’s policies and laws are being discussed and debated. Sarah will bring a strong and unique voice to the most vulnerable in our community and her election will show the world that even in the face of seemingly endless attacks and hate, we proudly stood up and asserted once and for all that trans lives and trans representation matters. As a community — and particularly in this moment — we have a responsibility to let history blaze its path and build a winning coalition that will get Sarah across the finish line and resoundingly elect her the first trans person ever elected to Congress.”
Lisa Turner, Executive Director of LPAC:
“LPAC was proud to stand behind Sarah McBride when she ran for the Delaware State Senate in 2018, and we are thrilled to be endorsing her on day-one as she seeks to become the first openly trans person ever elected to Congress. As an organization that is dedicated to electing more LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary people to public office – candidates who champion our values of women’s rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and social justice – endorsing Sen. McBride was an easy decision. She will be a fierce advocate for our community.”
Josie Caballero, Director of U.S. Trans Survey and Special Projects, NCTE Action Fund:
“The National Center for Transgender Equality Action Fund proudly endorses Sarah McBride for U.S. Congress. Representation is a pillar of American democracy. In a time when transgender people are being attacked in statehouses across the country, Sarah McBride will represent us in our nation’s capital and fiercely advocate for her constituents. Having an openly transgender person in Congress will bring a critical perspective to policy discussions that impact all of our lives. Sarah McBride’s victory will signal a shift towards a more inclusive political landscape in the United States.”
