LGBTQ Victory Fund was his first national endorsement
Washington, DC – Today Mondaire Jones won the Democratic primary for New York’s 17th Congressional District and is on-track to become one of the first openly LGBTQ Black members of Congress. The seat is considered a safe pickup for Democrats, making it highly likely he will win in November. If Jones and Ritchie Torres – a candidate for New York’s 15th Congressional District whose race is still too close to call – both win in November, they will become the first two openly LGBTQ Black members of Congress in U.S. history.
Victory Fund was Jones’ first national endorsement and invested heavily in his race. Victory Fund raised more than $20,000 for his campaign, directly contributed the maximum amount of $5,000 and provided additional visibility through its earned media and social media programs.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, released the following statement about Jones’ primary victory:
“LGBTQ people and African Americans are severely underrepresented in the U.S. Congress, but Mondaire’s victory gives hope that we are moving toward a federal government that is more representative of the people it serves. Mondaire’s unique experiences and perspectives as well as his work in criminal justice reform makes him an essential voice for this moment. When he wins in November, he will make history as one of the first openly LGBTQ Black members of Congress. But more importantly, he can be an influential member in the coming debates to address racism and police brutality, and in passing the Equality Act.”
