New Jersey was one of six states with zero out LGBTQ state legislators
Washington, DC – LGBTQ Victory Fund endorsed candidate Don Guardian won his election to the New Jersey state House, restoring LGBTQ representation in the state legislature. He will also become the first out LGBTQ Republican state legislator in New Jersey history. Currently, New Jersey is one of just six states in the entire nation with zero out LGBTQ people serving in the state legislature – and the only Democratic-leaning state without any.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of Victory Fund, released the following statement following Guardian’s win:
“New Jersey was one of just six states in the nation and the only blue state to have zero out LGBTQ state legislators currently serving, but Don’s victory begins a new chapter for the state. Without an LGBTQ voice in a state legislature – even in a state like New Jersey – the unique challenges our community face can often be ignored. Don joins a growing number of LGTBQ state legislators from across the country who will fight tirelessly for equality, but always with the best interests of their constituents front and center.”
