Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ+ Victory Fund candidate Satya Rhodes-Conway won the election for Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin. In 2019, she made history as the city’s second woman and first out LGBTQ+ person ever elected mayor. There are currently just 14 out LGBTQ+ women mayors in the U.S., according to LGBTQ+ Victory Institute.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, released the following statement:
“Since her history-making election in 2019, Satya has delivered real results for Madison such as increasing affordable housing and advancing civil rights protections. She has also risen as a national leader through her work as co-chair of Climate Mayors and member of Mayors Against Gun Violence. Madisonians trust her steady hand and are clearly excited about her future vision for the city, one rooted in increased opportunity and equity. Her success tonight is also a rallying cry to the LGBTQ+ community that we must remain engaged in the political process despite rising anti-LGBTQ hate – our rights depend on it.”
