Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ Victory Fund, the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders to public office, condemned the continued political attacks on Congressional candidate Alex Morse and demanded the source of the attacks be revealed. Over the weekend, multiple sources reported receiving phone calls from interviewers conducting a push poll, where recipients were asked if they would still support Morse if he had sent sexually explicit emails to college-aged students. It is unclear who paid for the bogus push poll.
Additionally, a Texas-based LLC called A Case for Women launched a paid Facebook campaign accusing Morse of being “predatory” and urged people to contact them with accusations against Morse. The company says it files lawsuits on behalf of women, making the motivation for its involvement in Massachusetts-based allegations with no women accusers highly dubious.
The new political attacks come just days after the Massachusetts Democratic Party admitted involvement in crafting the UMass Amherst College Democrats’ letter making vague and anonymous allegations against Morse. The party leadership had earlier claimed it would launch an investigation into the attack on Morse after the primary, citing its policy of non-involvement in Democratic primaries.
Sean Meloy, Senior Political Director for LGBTQ Victory Fund, released the following statement about the latest attacks:
“This push poll and these digital ads are the latest in a series of orchestrated political attacks meant to weaponize Alex’s sexuality and appeal to a homophobic narrative around the sex lives of LGBTQ people. It is evident that those involved in this plot planned to unleash these homophobic forces and setup a campaign of slander as ballots hit mailboxes. While the lies and coverups continue to be exposed, primary day is just two weeks away and the attacks continue, just as the perpetrators intended. It is essential that voters in the 1st Congressional District learn the source or sources of these attacks so they can make an informed decision about who they want as their next member of Congress.”
