LGBTQ Victory Fund — the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders to public office — has endorsed 12 candidates that are running for city council positions in New York City.
Primaries for city council elections are on June 22, and our candidates need help in the final push toward victory.
With all five LGBTQ incumbent members of the New York City Council termed out this year, some are concerned LGBTQ representation could diminish – or even disappear – next year. But we’ve endorsed 12 candidates determined to prevent that. In fact, if all 12 are elected, the council would have more LGBTQ members than any other city council or single state legislative chamber in the nation!
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, released the following statement about the endorsements:
“New York City’s slate of LGBTQ council candidates are a reflection of the city they aim to represent, and many will make political history if elected in November. With this election, the New York City Council could have more LGBTQ members than any other single legislative body in the nation, or have zero LGBTQ representation as the sitting LGBTQ members term out. Therefore, it is vital LGBTQ and allied voters turnout for LGBTQ candidates and ensure our community continues to have a strong presence on the council.”
Crystal Hudson, candidate for the District 35 council seat, received a Spotlight candidate endorsement for her campaign. If elected, Hudson would be the first out LGBTQ Black woman elected to the New York City Council.
Other candidates include Erik Bottcher (District 3), Marti Allen-Cummings (District 7), Lynn Schulman (District 29), Wilfredo Florentino (District 42), Tiffany Cabán (District 22), Josue Pierre (District 40), Chi Ossé (District 36), Jeffrey Omura (District 6), Kristin Richardson Jordan (District 9), Alfonso Quiroz (District 25) and Amit Bagga (District 26).
