President Barack Obama appointed Campbell Spencer, who is openly lesbian, to serve as a regional director in the Office of Political Affairs, reports the National Stonewall Democrats.
According to an article in the Washington Blade, Spencer was a national c0-chair of Obama’s LGBT steering and policty committee.
The Blade reports:
An August statement from the Obama campaign says Spencer “has been fighting for LGBT equality” since she campaigned against the marriage ban in Hawaii in 1998. She has worked as a field organizer for the Human Rights Campaign and served as a senior strategist for One Iowa, a statewide LGBT activist group.
John Marble, spokesperson for the National Stonewall Democrats, said Campbell is “a tremendous, and rather dynamic, addition” to Obama’s team.
“For those of us who know Campbell, we can easily see why her experiences as a strategist and effective communicator were sought out by the White House,” he said. “President Obama and our nation will greatly benefit from her public service.”
