Today we are thrilled to announced our endorsement of Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema for the U.S. Senate race in Arizona. The election of Kyrsten in one of the most closely watched races of 2018 would double LGBTQ representation in the U.S. Senate, and prevent her anti-LGBTQ challengers from securing a voice in the nation’s highest legislative body. The race will be among the most important for the LGBTQ community in 2018 and could determine the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
“As Steve Bannon and his hate-mongering political minions converge on the Arizona Senate race – we have Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema, who is a tireless fighter for equality and is proposing a positive agenda for the people of Arizona,” said Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, President & CEO of Victory Fund. “A win for Kyrsten would double LGBTQ representation in the U.S. Senate – a milestone for our community and a chance to secure a pro-equality majority that could push forward inclusive legislation. Victory Fund is thrilled to endorse Kyrsten for the U.S. Senate and we will have her back through Election Day 2018.”
The frontrunner in the Republican primary to challenge Congresswoman Sinema in the general election is Kelli Ward – a staunch anti-LGBTQ activist backed by President Trump and Steve Bannon. She is an opponent of marriage equality and said the defeat of an anti-LGBTQ “religious exemption” law was “one of the biggest disappointments during the time I served in the Arizona legislature.” If Congresswoman Sinema faces Ward in the general election, voters would choose between Sinema’s message of an inclusive Arizona and an anti-LGBTQ politician with a history of divisiveness over solutions.
Congresswoman Sinema is just the second endorsement for Victory Fund in the 2018 election cycle – along with openly lesbian U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin.
