Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., will receive the Victory Fund’s Gay & Lesbian Leadership Award tonight at the group’s annual awards event.
Collins is being honored for her courageous leadership last year at the center of the fight to repeal the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Ellison, a vice-chair of the House LGBT Equality Caucus, will be honored for his unwavering commitment to full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.
“We are proud to honor our allies in the fight for equality,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund. “We work to elect more openly LGBT Americans to public office so they can be our authentic voices in government, but they will always need the support of allies like Senator Collins and Congressman Ellison.”
Hundreds of attendees are expected at a cocktail reception this evening where Collins and Ellison will accept their awards. The event, atop 101 Constitution Ave., overlooks the U.S. Capitol.
