The Agenda

Early voting begins in potentially historic Atlanta election

Early voting for Atlanta’s municipal elections begins today, in which five Victory Fund-backed candidates are participating. Never before have so many LGBTQ people run for office in Atlanta — and there is the potential to dramatically increase LGBTQ representation in the city if they win on election day.

The candidates including:

Cathy Woolard, running for Mayor of Atlanta. She will be the first openly LGBTQ mayor of the city.

Alex Wan, running for City Council President of Atlanta. He will be the first gay male city council president and the first Asian American to serve in the position.

Liliana Bakhtiari, running for Atlanta City Council, District 5. She will be the first openly LGBTQ Muslim elected in the country.

Josh McNair, running for Fulton County Commission, District 4. He will be the first openly gay African American man ever elected in Georgia.

Kirk Rich, running for Atlanta City Council, District 6. He will keep the District 6 position an LGBTQ legacy seat.
