As the polls closed Tuesday, Greg Smith declared victory in his race to represent Juneau’s 1st District in the capital city’s Assembly. Smith, who currently serves as a state legislative aide, will become Juneau’s first openly LGBTQ Assembly Member. As the top vote-getter in the race, Smith won a three-year term on Tuesday.
Alaska is one of 28 states that don’t protect LGBTQ people from discrimination under state law. Statewide, there are six openly LGBTQ elected officials in Alaska—all of them members of city councils.
Greg is a native Alaskan serving as the Chief of Staff to state Representative Andi Story. He earned a degree in environmental sciences from Oregon State University in 2007. Since returning to Juneau, Greg has worked as a commercial fisherman, agricultural entrepreneur and small business owner, providing consulting services to nonprofits and campaigns.
