Kate will continue to be an important voice for equality on the Chula Vista Elementary School Board!
Biography
In a time when school boards are under attack, Kate Bishop is a fearless advocate for all students. A 4th generation Chula Vistan, a daughter of a lifelong teacher, a parent to two kids, and the first openly LGBTQ+ person to be elected to her school board, Kate’s concerns are not just around students’ school lives, but around the community itself. Since being elected, Kate has enacted policy that is transparent and accessible, and has uplifted the voices of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized students and families. Understanding the need not just for the youth of the school district but also for its employees, to feel seen and supported, Kate sought to raise the Pride flag for the first time in Chula Vista Elementary School District’s history. Facing a litany of pushback from a well organized anti-LGBTQ+ coalition, she stood her ground and the Pride flag was raised June 1, 2023. Soon after, local school districts and city councils followed suit. This one representative standing up for these youth has made a vast impact on her community. But the fight is not over. Kate is running for re-election to defend against book bans, forced outing of children, and other attacks on the supportive school environment CVESD has nurtured for their LGBTQ+ students and families.
