Biography

Councilmember Helen Grant lives in Norman, Oklahoma. Councilmember Grant and family moved to Norman in 2016. Their spouse of 22 years, Lance Grant, is a decorated veteran and shares two children with Helen. The Grant family were attracted to Norman for the school system, the older, walkable, urban neighborhoods, the proximity to Downtown and their favorite establishments, and creative community. Councilmember Grant, prior to their 2022 election, served as a board member at Resonator Art Institute, on the Community Development Block Grant committee, and the Inclusive Community Subcommittee. They also worked on Norman’s Community Refrigerator ordinance that allows 24/7 community fridges to be placed outside. Since taking office Councilmemeber Grant has lead an Affordable Housing Townhall, voted to increase Affordable Housing stock in Norman with the approval of Crimson Flats, a 75-unit affordable housing project, and worked to address issues around homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, equitable TIFs, sustainable land development practices, and making strategic investments in harm reduction and restorative justice rather than opting for punitive policies. Grant identifies as non-binary person because it feels the most natural fit for them. They also are committed to reproductive equality and the privacy of queer community to get the quality healthcare they need.
