Jonathan will continue to be a strong voice for equality in Raleigh!
Jonathan Melton serves as an at-large member of Raleigh City Council. He is working to build a city that comes from a place of “yes” and prioritizes responsible, equitable growth. Jonathan is the first out LGBTQ person elected citywide in Raleigh. He was elected in 2019 and serves as the chair of the City Council’s Economic Development and Innovation Committee.
Raleigh is a rapidly growing city. With that growth comes challenges, like infrastructure and transportation needs. Jonathan believes that public transportation should be safe and accessible to all, especially to those who rely on it most. During his first term, Jonathan has worked to provide more safe, diverse transit options. Jonathan has also worked to ensure that as Raleigh continues to grow, there remains space and opportunity for all. During his first term, he has worked to build density and height downtown and along transit corridors and to allow accessory dwelling units (ADUs) by right. He has also advocated for allowing duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes; these types of structures make housing more affordable while also reducing carbon emissions.
Jonathan is also committed to confronting injustices facing underrepresented communities and expanding protections for our LGBTQ neighbors. He believes all residents share in the responsibility to guarantee Raleigh is a diverse, open and welcoming city for all.
