Laurie was the first out bisexual legislator elected in the state of Michigan!
Laurie Pohutsky is running for re-election to her third term in the Michigan House of Representatives. Prior to being elected, she was a microbiologist specializing in the fields of health care, toxicology, and food safety. She has brought an evidence-based approach to the legislature. Pohutsky has introduced legislation to ban the so-called “gay and trans panic defense” as well as a bill to amend Michigan’s civil rights law and extend protections to the LGBTQ+ community. She serves as the Chair of the Women’s Progressive Caucus where she champions access to all forms of reproductive health care, including abortion. She is the first openly bisexual legislator elected in Michigan.
