From today’s press release:
Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders to public office, endorsed Fabian Nelson for the Mississippi House of Representatives, District 66. If elected, Nelson would be the first out LGBTQ+ person ever elected to the Mississippi state legislature.
There are currently zero out LGBTQ+ people serving in Mississippi at any level of government, according to LGBTQ+ Victory Institute’s Out for America project. Mississippi and Louisiana are the only U.S. states to have never elected an out LGBTQ+ person to the state legislature.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, released the following statement:
“The Mississippi state legislature has consistently put LGBTQ+ rights on the chopping block. As bigots take aim at LGBTQ+ kids and trans people once again, it is paramount that we end this harmful cycle. Fabian has spent more than a decade working in his community fighting for affordable housing and economic opportunities for low-income communities. We are confident his leadership and positive vision for a more inclusive future will not just make him an exceptional state lawmaker, but will inspire other LGBTQ+ people to step up and run for public office.”
