California State Senator Scott Wiener is under attack for his bill, SB 145, which equalizes LGBTQ people’s treatment under the existing sex offender registry law.
Washington, DC – Sen. Wiener has faced abuse, doxxing and death threats from Q-Anon adherents, was the subject of a rant by Rush Limbaugh yesterday, and both Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, Jr. shared a misleading report about the bill.
Today LGBTQ Victory Fund released the following statement regarding attacks against California State Senator Scott Wiener:
“It’s shameful that opponents of LGBTQ equality, including Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, Jr., have weaponized a bill and the sexual orientation of its sponsor to perpetuate homophobia. SB 145 is supported by survivors of sexual assault and by law enforcement, who recognize that the bill is needed to remedy inequality under existing law. The extreme right-wing operatives and leaders who are spreading disinformation about this bill and indulging in homophobic stereotypes are only doing it for their own selfish political gain. Senator Wiener has served his community honorably in the state Senate, and we’re proud to stand with him in the ongoing fight to ensure LGBTQ people in California are treated the exact same as straight people under law.”
